Next Level Combine Notebook

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio--Over 100 prospects gathered on a chilly Sunday morning about 10 miles west of Cleveland in Rocky River, Ohio for the Next Level Combine.

Participants ranged from class of 2011 standouts looking to cement their status as coveted college recruits to class of 2014 prospects yet to enroll in high school.

The action was intense as participants went through the 40-yard dash, pro shuttle, broad jump, and vertical jump in addition to a full slate of positional drills and one-on-ones.

Here's some observations from the four-hour event:

MVPs crowned: Most valuable player medals were awarded to the top performers in each position group. While overall MVP went to Austintown Fitch athlete Chris Davis, others receiving honors were QB Robbie Plagens (Rocky River), RB Shatiek Lewis (Troy HS, NY), WR Jeremy Graves (Garfield Heights), OL Tyler Sibbersen (Oregon Clay), LB Ante Lozancic (Eastlake North)and DB Terrence Pegram (Aurora). Seeing double: While Chris Davis took home overall MVP honors with a good showing at wide receiver, it sometimes looked as if he was throwing the ball to himself. Davis' identical twin brother Demetrious Davis had a good combine participating as a quarterback. On many of Chris' receptions in the one-on-one drills, it was none other that Demetrious delivering him the ball. He also showed well in the testing portion, recording a top five 40-yard dash time of 4.57.

Logging miles: Running back MVP Shatiek Lewis made quite the trek in order to participate. One of the few players from outside Northern Ohio, Lewis traveled from upstate New York near Albany. He made the most of his trip, however, recording a 4.60 40-yard dash and flashing good route running and hands in the one-on-ones.

Fuller picking up steam: Ashland quarterback Marcus Fuller is a combine warrior and made another appearance in Rocky River. The 6-foot, 200-pounder had a good day with a personal best 4.81-second laser-timed 40-yard dash and 4.19-second shuttle. He has recently had in-school visits with Vanderbilt, Akron, Ball State, Ohio, Air Force, and Youngstown State. Most of the Ivy League also remains in steady contact.

Never too young: Nobody was excluded from the combine, which meant two class of 2014 prospects were able to compete with their elders. That's right, both players are current eighth graders. The duo are future Hilliard Davidson running backs Demetrius Clark and Phillipie Motley. Both have good size and competed well against players two and three years older.

Under A-1 guidance: The offensive line and quarterback position groups got pointers and tips from two of the best teachers around. Former Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback and two-time Super Bowl champion Cliff Stoudt headed the QB group while former NFL All-Pro LeCharles Bentley assisted with the offensive line. Bentley also addressed the campers after the event offering sage advice on handing the recruiting process and working hard both on the field and in the classroom.
