COLUMBUS, Ohio – Akron Buchtel high school has a definite play maker at the running back position and coaches are starting to take notice of Darvon Hubbard. The 6-foot, 195-pounder from the class of 2020 took part in a one-day camp at Ohio State on Saturday and it paid off with coaches from throughout the region and beyond being a part of the camp.

Hubbard earned his first offer from the University of Toledo and garnered a lot of interest from other schools as well including Pitt.

"I was kind of surprised but I was also really excited," Hubbard said. "That is something that I have been working for. To see it all finally pay off."

Hubbard started as a true freshman at Buchtel last season and had more than half a dozen touchdowns in his first season in high school. He admitted that the game was a little faster than he expected at first but once he was able to calm down a little bit, things slowed down and he found some success.

How would Hubbard describe himself as a runner for those who have not had a chance to see him?

"They would see a very explosive runner," Hubbard said. "I have got really big play ability in the open field. And I can catch."

Hubbard worked under the watchful eye of Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford on Saturday. What kind of feedback did the young back get from the veteran coach?

"He taught me a lot of key pointers, especially on route running," Hubbard said. "He is a great coach, a great coach to be around."

The competitive nature of Hubbard pushed him to try and prove something on Saturday, even with older backs who have a couple of years of high school ball under their belts.

"I wanted to prove that I was the best player at this camp," Hubbard stated. "That is mindset going into every camp. Just go out there and have fun and be me."

Class of 2019 running back star Noah Cain out of IMG Academy in Bradenton (Fla.) was also at the camp and that pushed Hubbard even harder to compete with Cain on every rep and try and measure himself up against one of the best of a class one year ahead of him. But age is just a number to Hubbard.

"I don't care if you are older than me or younger than me," Hubbard said. "I am still going to go 110-percent and I am going to give you all that I got."
