Coffman freshman turning heads

Drennen is a rare freshman starter at Coffman.

The Dublin (Ohio) Coffman football program has put out a ton of talent in recent years but none of those elite prospects were varsity starters for the Shamrocks. Class of 2020 running back/receiver Mike Drennen changed that this summer. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect was moved up to varsity and is starting as a slot receiver. Drennen's team got a big win on Friday night, defeating Fairfield to move to 2-1 on the season.

"I think we did great on the defensive side of the ball," said Drennen. "Offense we are still working, we could have done a little better."

Drennen has been a running back most of his life but in order to get the best players on the field, he has been playing mostly receiver for Coffman to this point. Playing varsity as a freshman is a rare accomplishment, especially at a traditional power.

"It has been amazing," he said. "I love it. In practice I was just going as hard as I can every day so the coaches said that I deserved it."

Drennen has already found the end zone a few times for the Shamrocks, including in the season opener against Springfield.

"I was so hyped," he said of his first touchdown. "It was unexplainable."

Recruiting wise, Drennen has already landed his first Power Five offer when Kentucky came through in July. There is another SEC program, however, that he would like to hear from as things begin to pick up.

"Tennessee for sure," he said. "I like how they run the ball. I love watching Jalen Hurd."

Drennen hit the camp circuit hard over the summer and made the elite group at Ohio State in June, when he was pulled inside to workout with the top players at the camp. Growing up right down the road from campus, Ohio State is also an early program of interest.

"I would definitely (consider going there) for sure," he said. "It's one of my top schools."
