CANTON, Ohio -- The Anna Rockets pounced on New Middletown Springfield early in the OHSAA Division VI Championship game on Friday morning and never looked back, routing the Tigers 48-14.
Senior quarterback Bart Bixler rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns and added another score through the air. Senior Riley Huelskamp dominated on both sides of the ball for the Rockets, rushing for 146 yards and three touchdowns and intercepting two passes on defense, one he returned for a score.
Anna jumped all over Springfield, scoring the first 21 points of the game before the Tigers were able to stabilize things before halftime thanks to a pair of touchdown passes by sophomore quarterback Beau Brungard.
But the momentum would not last. Springfield received the second half kickoff but Huelskamp jumped a Brungard pass toward the left sideline and raced into the end zone to put Anna up 34-14.
The win gives Anna its first state championship in program history. The varsity program had only been in existence since 2000, but had made 11 playoff appearances before this season.
